My boss decided to have us start doing weekly drawing challenges while the work flow is still slow. This week we could draw anything we wanted, but had to finish within an hour and stick to the 5 color palette she sent out.

Ghost World sketch - 2002

I was looking through some old journals and sketchbooks, and came across this portrait I did in 2002 from the movie Ghost World. I loved that film; suburban misfit alternateens bitching about the locals, Steve Buscemi, Scarlett Johanssen before her big break, all within the context of Daniel Clowes' graphic novel with his signature dark humor and deep insight. I paused the dvd to draw this close up, where Enid (Thora Birch) has her moment of awakening at the end.

I didn't know Daniel Clowes was a resident of Oakland until recently. Yay Bay Area :)

I got a call some months ago from my friend Josiah, developer of the iDoodle iPhone app and Technical Director at Dreamworks Animation. He tells me he needs some zombie illustrations for an iPhone zombie coloring book app he's developing, so I hooked him up with these babies. You can check out the app and get it here.

My brother David who works at Microsoft in Seattle mentioned he heard of a start up animation studio there called Lilipip, so I hopped on real quick. Luckily they had this gig for me not too long after. I didn't have a whole lot of time to get it done as I'm juggling other projects, but I think it came out pretty good.

My German instincts came in on this one with the square-shaped business card. My Japanese side is responsible for the cute little pokemon-ish devil character. Yes, the Axis powers are working in my favor with design :)

I usually use OvernightPrints.com for printing business cards since they have the best deals, but I didn't see the option for square shaped ones so I went with Uprinting.com who does. They got high ratings on Yelp so I took the plunge and I couldn't be happier.

Got a gig back in June where I had to fill up a notebook with notes and doodles...for a girl. Not as easy as it sounds, it's actually pretty hard to write like a girl. I don't know why they didn't just hire a girl artist, but it was fun. The commercial was made by Dwyer Productions.

Now I can complete my transformation to working San Francisco resident stuffed with organic hummus, chai lattes and Full House theme song playing in the background (shooby do bap bada) :P

My Inner Rodin

I'm not one for drawing realistic things, but I drew some faces & bodies at a bar and my friend Bow Jones said they were beautiful. I then got fed up with designing my website again last night and just went off on a freestyle sketch frenzy in Flash. I'm a big fan of Rodin...and women, so I couldn't help myself w/ the erotica.

6 hour life drawing classes at the School of Visual Arts will definitely have an effect on ya, these were all done freehand.

Remember that hot opening scene in Darjeeling Limited where Natalie Portman raises her leg to Jason Schwartzman to take off her boots so they can get down? I tried to illustrate that w/ a few changes in detail.

Bow showed me a nice picture of a hand he drew and we got to talking about how we loved to draw hands. Some quick sketches:

A Full Page of Line Melody

Last Friday there was a Drink and Draw event in lieu of WonderCon at the 111 Minna Art Gallery in downtown San Francisco, of which me and my fellow artist friend from college Jenn Tong attended. I thought it was a casual event but it turned out there were actually some pretty well-known comic artists there doing their thing. Also, the pieces were to be auctioned to help support the recovery of Underground Comix legend S. Clay Wilson so whatever I made was going to have a price tag.

So there I was, probably the only artist no one's heard of drawing in the spotlights in the middle of the room. I was nervous and shaking a little, I hate drawing in front of people and it took until well after the ice cubes melted in my Jameson! I did what came most natural to me, my recent love for freestyle line melodies. Two guys there were nice enough to compliment me as I drew alongside brilliant comic artists drawing Hulk, men in retro detective outfits and sexy girl superheroes. They put a $25 price tag on mine, but they displayed it upside down. C'mon people, isn't it obvious which way is up?! :P

Melody of Line

So I'm eating some pizza at a friend's house in Kirkland, WA and I start doodling this pattern on the pizza box. This was right at the start of the big Seattle blizzard in December that's just recently melted away. I didn't think much of it at the time, but when our car tires got stuck in the snow and we had to shove cardboard under them to get out, I couldn't let this little guy go.

Even though you see this style of line a lot on t-shirt prints and Urban Outfitter-esque decor, to drop some history on ya you'll see variations of it in Baroque, Celtic and Islamic art as well as in pinstriping which started in the 50's with Von Dutch (how many people who wear his name know that?). I started really getting the hang of it when I visited the Mucha Museum in Prague back in September last year. I pulled out my sketchbook and sketched, getting a feel for the "melody of line" as Alfons Mucha puts it, from the frames of his beautiful graphic prints. I like to freestyle with it.

Alien Outlander for Pop Euphoria exhibit

A fellow artist Veronica Hebard spotted my alien character design a few posts back and asked if she could display it in her Pop Euphoria exhibit at the Aurora Gallery in Worcester, MA opening Dec. 6th, 2008. So I turned it into the 4th of my 3.5" x 3.5" acrylic on wood block paintings:

*Big hands make characters look mega cool, that goes as far back as Michaelangelo's David.

perfect for home gardens and flower arrangements :P

Renato the Rock Star

I did this one about a month ago for my creative director, Renato Castilho at NickJr.com since he hooked me up w/ my last two jobs, and is generally an awesome person. Rumor had it he used to be in a Prince cover band where he played Prince, thus the memoir here that I made for him as a thank you gift. The third of my 3.5" x 3.5" acrylic on wood paintings like Blue Moon and Little Devil.

Iraq Benefit - Tshirt Design

A few months ago I did this Tshirt design to benefit Iraqi children who were orphaned as their parents were victims of bombing. It was through an organization who contacted me about it called TakePride.com

This is based on an 8 year old orphan from Baghdad named Basam who's into boxing. I got the idea from this commercial where a bunch of kids were talking about how they wanted to "beat up" cancer, as they made angry faces and swung their fists.

Atomic Joyride from Outer Space - cover

Ah, finished the inner cover for the comic I tried to design the alien for 2 posts ago. Turns out the aliens will have iguana heads, and for this story (of the 6 in the book) they attack a 50's drive-in movie theater (now do you get the pic?).

For this I studied a lot of different Coup de Ville cars from that time, which was fun since I digs the retro style. Originally I drew it pretty plain but found myself drawing it more funky when I turned up my speakers to the Avalanches. I also googled iguanas to discover there are lots of different kinds, so I had to find what I liked about each and make my own.

The final product was done in Flash and took several weeks to put together and polish off. I read the script for the comic written by Sam Moyerman and illustrated by Ian Glaubinger and it's definitely a unique and entertaining story. It'll be published toward the end of April under the title Rise of the Outlanders...look for it at a comic con near you!

Alisha's Tattoo

My first tattoo design! I was flattered that my roommate Alisha let me design her tattoo which she concepted and I illustrated. After a few weeks of sketching the look of the monkey and koala, then tweaking the design and color, we came up with this. The tree is from Paper Mario for Nintendo Wii.

I love that it's pretty far off from what comes to mind when you think "tattoo". I illustrated it in Flash and Irish Jay over at Tattoo Lou's in Selden, NY (Long Island) emblazoned it into Alisha's leg forever. The initials carved into the tree represent her late cousin Mike...so yeah, not to be mistaken for the artist's signature there.

As a new year's resolution, I'm going to try and start doing a weekly illustration. This is the first image that popped in my head (or something close to it) when I decided I was definitely going to do it. No doubt I played some Tom Waits to get the feel for this one.

In high school, I used to paint wooden plaques w/ my mom as a dayjob from a company called Shaker Corners. Little did I know I'd be doing exactly the same thing as a hobby 10 years later. I thought by now I'd be a cyborg processing laser fabricated sprockets for Microsoft's Time Machine v5. But nope, still painting on wood.

The Wearhouse and Studio T

We just launched our customizable Tshirt lab for your avatar on Millsberry.com called Studio T. Just like the Surf Game, I did the artwork while John McElroy and Jason Sauser worked their magic on the coding, and Tony Eaton oversaw the whole project as Snr. Art Director. We also decided to have me redesign the clothing store interior now called the Wearhouse where Studio T lives. After much brainstorming, I was able to create a cool logo too.

Surfing Game

For the last 2 months, me and my team at work have been slaving away at this surfing game for Millsberry.com. We wanted it to be the stepping stone for what we want to see in terms of design and illustration on the site. You can play it even if you're not a member but be sure to READ THE INSTRUCTIONS. It takes a sec to get used to.

I did the character designs, character animation, design and illustration of the title screen, design of the waves, backgrounds, and some other things here and there. The flourishings, additional design and actionscripting were done by Tony Eaton and the actionscript wizard behind it all with contributions to design was John McElroy.

Definitely proud of this one :)
